It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time

There’s a saying about the road to hell being paved with good intentions.

And as I have said on more than one occasion, please put “It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time” on my headstone.

How this project actually came about was that I was drinking at my friend’s place, after having previously been drinking in a couple of bars in the city, and I was going on about how I was going to have all of this free time with the new job and how I’d have to find things to do, and somewhere, out of nowhere, came the idea to MAKE ONE HUNDRED CAKES! As I said, I’d been drinking.

But because we are both the sort of person who likes to put things in writing, and because I almost always have my day planner and a pen on me, and because, as I said, I’d been drinking and one of my worst habits is talking a big game at these times, and because my friend is one of those sorts of person who eggs others on when they’re talking a big game… out came the pen and I wrote this:

6 March 2020: The agreement (I signed it too.)

We both signed at the bottom and all you lawyers out there can tell me if it’s binding or not.

What I can tell you is that I’m the sort of person who, once I’ve talked that big game, follows through. And I make these sorts of personal challenge and stick to them, even though I don’t owe it to anyone other than myself to follow through, in the long run. Even if I end up falling behind in the baking schedule, and find myself crying in the kitchen on March 29, 2021, with 15 cakes left to bake, I’ll follow through. There I’ll be, covered in flour and eggshells, with a wild look in my eye, muttering “it seemed like a good idea at the time”.
